Faculty Scot Talk: Wisdom "Under the Sun" - Why it Matters

Elaine will speak on translating the Bible’s wisdom literature from “the pulpit to the pew.” This highly accessible and engaging introduction to the Bible’s wisdom literature is built on a strong scholarly foundation but also aims to nurture love for God, the source of wisdom and truth, and to help one wrestle in the context of his or her own faith journey with the love, fear, doubt, joy, anger, and ecstasy expressed by the biblical writers.

Church of the Small Things: The Million Little Pieces that Make Up a Life

Is my ordinary, everyday life actually significant? Is it okay to be fulfilled by the simple acts of raising kids, working in an office, and cooking chicken for dinner?

It’s been said, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away.” The pressure of that can be staggering as we spend our days looking for that big thing that promises to take our breath away. Meanwhile, we lose sight of the small significance of fully living with every breath we take.

Melanie Shankle, New York Times bestselling author and writer at The Big Mama Blog tackles these questions head on in her fourth book, Church of the Small Things. Easygoing and relatable, she speaks directly to the heart of women of all ages who are longing to find significance and meaning in the normal, sometimes mundane world of driving carpool to soccer practice, attending class on their college campus, cooking meals for their family, or taking care of a sick loved one.

Racial Justice Post-Charlottesville: Where Do We Go from Here

As America becomes a minority-majority nation with half of American children being people of color by 2020 and half of the American population by 2044, it is imperative that Christian communities model not only racial reconciliation, but racial justice. The construct of race has historically been used as a tool of oppression. In light of Charlottesville and other recent events, how can Christians model constructive reconciliation and what can they do to dismantle this system? What needs to happen in order for the conversation to move from reconciliation to justice?  Join leading scholars Michael Emerson, provost of North Park University, Brenda Salter McNeil, Associate Professor and Director of the Reconciliation Studies Program of Seattle Pacific University, and Alvin Padilla, Academic Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Western Theological Seminary.
